Narrative:

We were being vectored for the visual approach to runway 22R and we had the ILS runway 22R navaids tuned and idented for both the captain and first officer as a backup for the visual approach. As we approached baton rouge metropolitan from the northwest at 1800 ft MSL the airport rotating beacon was in sight. At the time we were on a vector of 110 degrees. We told approach control that we could take a visual from our position. We were then cleared for the visual approach to runway 22R. We turned to the right to set up a 'dog-leg' intercept for 22R. Thereafter, we turned right to follow an on localizer and on GS indication as we looked for the runway lights for 22R. As we descended through approximately 1000 ft MSL, baton rouge approach control told us that we were about 5 mi right of the localizer and then directed a go around with a climbing right turn back to 1800 ft MSL. We immediately complied with ATC instructions. We were then vectored for the ILS runway 22R. The ILS navaids for this subsequent approach monitored normally throughout the approach and landing. Lesson: it appears that we were victim to a false ILS signal, however, make sure that the runway lights are actually visible before taking a visual approach at night.

Title: AN ACR LGT LINED UP ON A FALSE LOC AND GS AT NIGHT IN VMC. THE APCH CTLR NOTED THE PROBLEM AND ISSUED A GAR AND A NEW CLRNC.

Narrative: WE WERE BEING VECTORED FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 22R AND WE HAD THE ILS RWY 22R NAVAIDS TUNED AND IDENTED FOR BOTH THE CAPT AND FO AS A BACKUP FOR THE VISUAL APCH. AS WE APCHED BATON ROUGE METRO FROM THE NW AT 1800 FT MSL THE ARPT ROTATING BEACON WAS IN SIGHT. AT THE TIME WE WERE ON A VECTOR OF 110 DEGS. WE TOLD APCH CTL THAT WE COULD TAKE A VISUAL FROM OUR POS. WE WERE THEN CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 22R. WE TURNED TO THE R TO SET UP A 'DOG-LEG' INTERCEPT FOR 22R. THEREAFTER, WE TURNED R TO FOLLOW AN ON LOC AND ON GS INDICATION AS WE LOOKED FOR THE RWY LIGHTS FOR 22R. AS WE DSNDED THROUGH APPROX 1000 FT MSL, BATON ROUGE APCH CTL TOLD US THAT WE WERE ABOUT 5 MI R OF THE LOC AND THEN DIRECTED A GAR WITH A CLBING R TURN BACK TO 1800 FT MSL. WE IMMEDIATELY COMPLIED WITH ATC INSTRUCTIONS. WE WERE THEN VECTORED FOR THE ILS RWY 22R. THE ILS NAVAIDS FOR THIS SUBSEQUENT APCH MONITORED NORMALLY THROUGHOUT THE APCH AND LNDG. LESSON: IT APPEARS THAT WE WERE VICTIM TO A FALSE ILS SIGNAL, HOWEVER, MAKE SURE THAT THE RWY LIGHTS ARE ACTUALLY VISIBLE BEFORE TAKING A VISUAL APCH AT NIGHT.
