Narrative:

On or about mar/tue/92, XX30 hours local, a student and myself started the instructional flight as scheduled. The student had completed the preflight and as I usually do, asked the student about the quantity of oil and fuel. He replied 5 quarts oil and 1/3 on each tank. I estimated 7 to 8 gallons which would give an small aircraft approximately 1 1/2 hours of fuel with no reserve. The flight commenced at about XX50. We departed the area to the south at about 4 1/2 mi south of the airport. We decided to utilize the crosswind that was present to practice crosswind lndgs. After 1.2 hours on the hobbs meter I mentioned to the student we had better do a full stop the next time around. On climb out the engine sputtered. The nose of the aircraft was lowered immediately by myself and I started a turn into the wind and back to the airport surface, because of altitude and a lack of suitable areas ahead to land. A successful landing was made with no injuries to the occupants, no damage to the aircraft or airport surface. When the aircraft was refueled 23.3. Gallons were added to a total fuel capacity of 26.0 gallons, with 22.5 usable gallons. Make sure there is sufficient fuel and then some for the flight.

Title: FUEL EXHAUSTION MANDATES AN IMMEDIATE LNDG ON ARPT SURFACE.

Narrative: ON OR ABOUT MAR/TUE/92, XX30 HRS LCL, A STUDENT AND MYSELF STARTED THE INSTRUCTIONAL FLT AS SCHEDULED. WE DECIDED TO UTILIZE THE XWIND THAT WAS PRESENT TO PRACTICE XWIND LNDGS. AFTER 1.2 HRS ON THE HOBBS METER I MENTIONED TO THE STUDENT WE HAD BETTER DO A FULL STOP THE NEXT TIME AROUND. ON CLBOUT THE ENG SPUTTERED. THE NOSE OF THE ACFT WAS LOWERED IMMEDIATELY BY MYSELF AND I STARTED A TURN INTO THE WIND AND BACK TO THE ARPT SURFACE, BECAUSE OF ALT AND A LACK OF SUITABLE AREAS AHEAD TO LAND. A SUCCESSFUL LNDG WAS MADE WITH NO INJURIES TO THE OCCUPANTS, NO DAMAGE TO THE ACFT OR ARPT SURFACE. WHEN THE ACFT WAS REFUELED 23.3. GALLONS WERE ADDED TO A TOTAL FUEL CAPACITY OF 26.0 GALLONS, WITH 22.5 USABLE GALLONS. MAKE SURE THERE IS SUFFICIENT FUEL AND THEN SOME FOR THE FLT.
