Narrative:

During taxi in to gate in clt after receiving taxi clearance from ramp control, aircraft was on yellow taxi line, mechanic was signaling us in to gate. Ramp agent on left side gave stop signal. Aircraft was stopped and I set parking brakes. Agent and mechanic went over to left side of aircraft to check left wingtip clearance between wingtip and a catering truck. Both the agent and mechanic gave a thumbs up all clear sign. Mechanic then signaled to resume taxi to gate. Approximately 3 ft from gate, left wingtip struck catering truck. Damage was minimal and was written up in aircraft logbook. Contributing factors were a rainstorm had just started, mechanic did not have rain gear on, gate X and Y are at odd angles to each other which creates confusion and congestion. Catering truck was manned and trying to get into gate Y. I believe they thought that once our aircraft was stopped short of gate that we were already at the gate and parked, and they were free to move truck. I believe that they started to move truck the same time we resumed our taxi into the gate.
