Narrative:

While lining up on final approach for ILS runway 33 at bgr, we were approximately 6-7 mi from tott IAF on straight-in approach. We were level at 2300 ft under radar vectors for approach. At this point, we started to receive a 'terrain, terrain' warning from GPWS, while still in level flight. First officer was flying approach, and I immediately ordered 'toga' (takeoff/go around thrust), and then to level at 3000 ft MSL. We were still below the GS and did, in fact, register a radio altitude of about 1000 to 1100 ft above terrain. We advised controller of our climb and he said it was okay to continue, and cleared us for approach. It was uneventful from that point to touchdown. After landing, I had a radio conversation with tower controller, and advised him of what had happened. He said that he has received a couple of other reports/complaints about the same thing recently, and did advise us that the MVA for that area was 2300 ft. I think that because of the apparent hills there that created the rapid rise on the RA and causing subsequent alerts, either the FAA should raise the MVA for that sector, or at least put out a notice to crews flying into bgr to be aware of what to potentially expect there.

Title: ALTDEV ALT EXCURSION FROM ASSIGNED AS PIC FLC RESPONDS TO GPWS WARNING WHILE PROX TO GND.

Narrative: WHILE LINING UP ON FINAL APCH FOR ILS RWY 33 AT BGR, WE WERE APPROX 6-7 MI FROM TOTT IAF ON STRAIGHT-IN APCH. WE WERE LEVEL AT 2300 FT UNDER RADAR VECTORS FOR APCH. AT THIS POINT, WE STARTED TO RECEIVE A 'TERRAIN, TERRAIN' WARNING FROM GPWS, WHILE STILL IN LEVEL FLT. FO WAS FLYING APCH, AND I IMMEDIATELY ORDERED 'TOGA' (TKOF/GAR THRUST), AND THEN TO LEVEL AT 3000 FT MSL. WE WERE STILL BELOW THE GS AND DID, IN FACT, REGISTER A RADIO ALT OF ABOUT 1000 TO 1100 FT ABOVE TERRAIN. WE ADVISED CTLR OF OUR CLB AND HE SAID IT WAS OKAY TO CONTINUE, AND CLRED US FOR APCH. IT WAS UNEVENTFUL FROM THAT POINT TO TOUCHDOWN. AFTER LNDG, I HAD A RADIO CONVERSATION WITH TWR CTLR, AND ADVISED HIM OF WHAT HAD HAPPENED. HE SAID THAT HE HAS RECEIVED A COUPLE OF OTHER RPTS/COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME THING RECENTLY, AND DID ADVISE US THAT THE MVA FOR THAT AREA WAS 2300 FT.
