Narrative:

Visual conditions. Field in sight. Requested intercept ILS to check autoplt coupler. Cleared to intercept and cleared for the approach. Involved with troubleshooting autoplt coupler did not notice that we were not told to contact tower. Realized situation on short final. Completed normal landing and contacted tower. Directed to taxi to ramp. No problem indicated by tower. Should not let maintenance concerns distract from flying job. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states major problem was checking the coupler of the autoplt. Secondly reporter training new first officer. Combination distraction enough so that he did not recognize they had not received handoff. Feels the request for out of ordinary approach whereby they were vectored to cross behind air carrier on approach for 26R so they could do coupled approach on 26L may have distracted controller so handoff was never given. He changed frequency on short final but did not communicate at that time. Local controller said nothing about lack of contact.
