Narrative:

After climbing through 400 ft AGL, first officer (PF) turned north on course which is what I thought our clearance was. Tower handed us off to departure which asked us to turn right heading 290. When I reported we had already passed 290 degrees and were on a 360 degree heading, he asked if tower had given that heading. I told him we had turned on course since our takeoff clearance included no specific heading and our route clearance was as filed. Departure controller said 'derby city 1 departure' which was included in our route clearance specified 'runway heading' or 'as assigned.' the first officer who had taken the clearance (route) initially had not mentioned that the route clearance included a SID during our review of the clearance and I failed to check on it.

Title: ACR MDT TRACK HDG DEV. FAILED TO MAINTAIN RWY HDG ON SID OUT OF SDF.

Narrative: AFTER CLBING THROUGH 400 FT AGL, FO (PF) TURNED N ON COURSE WHICH IS WHAT I THOUGHT OUR CLRNC WAS. TWR HANDED US OFF TO DEP WHICH ASKED US TO TURN R HDG 290. WHEN I RPTED WE HAD ALREADY PASSED 290 DEGS AND WERE ON A 360 DEG HDG, HE ASKED IF TWR HAD GIVEN THAT HDG. I TOLD HIM WE HAD TURNED ON COURSE SINCE OUR TKOF CLRNC INCLUDED NO SPECIFIC HDG AND OUR RTE CLRNC WAS AS FILED. DEP CTLR SAID 'DERBY CITY 1 DEP' WHICH WAS INCLUDED IN OUR RTE CLRNC SPECIFIED 'RWY HDG' OR 'AS ASSIGNED.' THE FO WHO HAD TAKEN THE CLRNC (RTE) INITIALLY HAD NOT MENTIONED THAT THE RTE CLRNC INCLUDED A SID DURING OUR REVIEW OF THE CLRNC AND I FAILED TO CHK ON IT.
