Narrative:

Preflight inspection by captain and first officer at stt revealed a large dent (8 inches by 10 inches by 1.5 inches) in leading edge of left leading edge slat about 4 ft from fuselage. No notice of bird strike was made prior to inspection. Considering apparent damage and maintenance capabilities at stt, it was decided to fly to stx for further inspection. Maintenance inspection at stx found more damage than preflight estimate. In addition to the dent a double row of 18 broken or loose rivets was discovered. The aircraft was taken out of service for repair. After a patch was placed on the damaged area the aircraft was ferried by us to mia for further repair.
