Narrative:

WX clear 40 mi visibility 10 mi east of rlg VOR at 17000. Center cleared us 'direct eagle, visual approach.' started descent to 14000. Center asked position and stated they had lost radar contact. Past rlg, center 'cleared us to 16000.' we cancelled IFR and proceeded to the airport. 'Problem' confusion with clearance. I feel center cleared us for a visual approach at the same time they cleared us direct to the eagle airport and we no longer had an altitude restriction.
