Narrative:

I was the captain on flight from bos to abe. Copilot was flying. I was calling a writeup in to company maintenance when I felt the aircraft pitch up. (We were at 14000 ft MSL with the autoplt engaged in heading and altitude hold modes.) when I looked at the altimeter it read +/-14400 ft MSL. (The climb was abrupt and rapid.) the copilot disengaged the autoplt and descended to 14000 ft MSL. Just as we leveled at 14000 ft ATC called and asked our altitude. We gave it truthfully at 14000 ft. ATC advised that he had shown us at 14500. We stopped using the autoplt and wrote it up as per company operations.
