Narrative:

After landing on 4R, tower asked us off the runway immediately due to traffic behind us. Trying to help ATC, captain pulled off the runway as soon as possible thinking it was a taxiway. Apparently area we taxied onto was a nonlighted asphalted place. We were clear of the runway but not wanting to take any chances, we informed the tower that we were not clear. This action caused the aircraft behind us to go around. This situation could have been prevented if all the runway lights were working. Apparently, there were some lights missing in that asphalted area causing it to look like taxiway.
