Narrative:

About 10 NM from the scurry VOR we saw some buildups ahead of us. The first officer made very minor heading changes (5 degree left and right). Center was busy and we could not get a word in to tell him. After awhile center came on and asked us to fly heading 270 degree. I told him we would in about 4 mi, 'cause of buildups. He said: 'did you get permission for those deviations?' I told him we were going direct scy as cleared. He apparently had noticed our 5 degree heading changes and was not happy about it. What can we do when ATC is too busy to talk to? Dfw area is too congested! You can't get a word in! It's unsafe.
