Narrative:

Approaching clt airport on the unarm arrival STAR at 12 DME, noted climbing medium large transport headed sbound. We were at 10000 MSL 250 KTS and level. We were not TCASII equipped. Conditions were ceiling and visibility unlimited. I noted the climbing medium large transport turn westerly toward us and was then probably more than 3 mi distant. His climb was not such that I was sure he would be higher than 10000 before crossing our northerly track. And he seemed to be converging. As we were receiving a descent clearance to 9000 I believed his appearance in our right side window was stationary and closing rapidly. He was slightly nose up and slightly left wing up. This made me feel he could probably not see us as he was reaching our altitude. I disconnected the autoplt and banked 40 degree left with down pitch of 10 degree to avoid what was clearly a collision course of the 2 aircraft. I was passing through 9400 when I made contact with our approach controller who acknowledged and gave us repeated clearance to 9000 and 'back' to course 360 degrees.

Narrative: APCHING CLT ARPT ON THE UNARM ARR STAR AT 12 DME, NOTED CLBING MLG HEADED SBOUND. WE WERE AT 10000 MSL 250 KTS AND LEVEL. WE WERE NOT TCASII EQUIPPED. CONDITIONS WERE CEILING AND VISIBILITY UNLIMITED. I NOTED THE CLBING MLG TURN WESTERLY TOWARD US AND WAS THEN PROBABLY MORE THAN 3 MI DISTANT. HIS CLB WAS NOT SUCH THAT I WAS SURE HE WOULD BE HIGHER THAN 10000 BEFORE XING OUR NORTHERLY TRACK. AND HE SEEMED TO BE CONVERGING. AS WE WERE RECEIVING A DSCNT CLRNC TO 9000 I BELIEVED HIS APPEARANCE IN OUR R SIDE WINDOW WAS STATIONARY AND CLOSING RAPIDLY. HE WAS SLIGHTLY NOSE UP AND SLIGHTLY L WING UP. THIS MADE ME FEEL HE COULD PROBABLY NOT SEE US AS HE WAS REACHING OUR ALT. I DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND BANKED 40 DEG L WITH DOWN PITCH OF 10 DEG TO AVOID WHAT WAS CLRLY A COLLISION COURSE OF THE 2 ACFT. I WAS PASSING THROUGH 9400 WHEN I MADE CONTACT WITH OUR APCH CTLR WHO ACKNOWLEDGED AND GAVE US REPEATED CLRNC TO 9000 AND 'BACK' TO COURSE 360 DEGS.
