Narrative:

We were en route from lax to mia. We had been cleared direct to cew, flight plan route. Prior to cew, we were asked if we wanted direct to pie. I asked them to stand by and I checked a letter we had received from our company. I saw that rtes J58 and J86 were acceptable airways, so I told the center we could take direct pie. After changing the route and check points, I took another look at the letter and discovered this letter only applied to over water aircraft. We were not over water equipped. By this time we were out far enough that pie was closer than any other point. The obvious corrective action is to take the time to read the entire letter. Never rush the decision and attempt to cover the entire situation.
