Narrative:

Engine failure on takeoff roll low speed abort at 90 KTS. On takeoff roll a loud pop occurred and an engine fail light illuminated, the takeoff was aborted at 90 KTS and aircraft taxied clear of runway. The engine failure shut down checklist was completed and clearance to taxi back to the gate was received. Subsequently, tower/ground told us that they had seen a burst of flames on takeoff roll (which was assumed a compressor stall) and shortly thereafter smoke was coming from #2 engine, we therefore called for the fire trucks and being close to the gate, taxied to the gate and swiftly deplaned the passengers out the jetway. The fire crew hosed down the #2 engine and secured any signs of smoke or possible fire. The passengers were then allowed back on the plane to retrieve their personal belongings in the overhead. Appropriate checklist were accomplished, forms filled out and appropriate personnel notified. Maintenance personnel indicated that 1 of the main bearings failed and caused turbine failure and destruction. Throughout the event, crew performance was excellent and judgement and actions were appropriate for the situation.

Title: ACR LGT ENG FAILURE ON TKOF FROM DCA. TKOF ABORTED.

Narrative: ENG FAILURE ON TKOF ROLL LOW SPD ABORT AT 90 KTS. ON TKOF ROLL A LOUD POP OCCURRED AND AN ENG FAIL LIGHT ILLUMINATED, THE TKOF WAS ABORTED AT 90 KTS AND ACFT TAXIED CLR OF RWY. THE ENG FAILURE SHUT DOWN CHKLIST WAS COMPLETED AND CLRNC TO TAXI BACK TO THE GATE WAS RECEIVED. SUBSEQUENTLY, TWR/GND TOLD US THAT THEY HAD SEEN A BURST OF FLAMES ON TKOF ROLL (WHICH WAS ASSUMED A COMPRESSOR STALL) AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER SMOKE WAS COMING FROM #2 ENG, WE THEREFORE CALLED FOR THE FIRE TRUCKS AND BEING CLOSE TO THE GATE, TAXIED TO THE GATE AND SWIFTLY DEPLANED THE PASSENGERS OUT THE JETWAY. THE FIRE CREW HOSED DOWN THE #2 ENG AND SECURED ANY SIGNS OF SMOKE OR POSSIBLE FIRE. THE PASSENGERS WERE THEN ALLOWED BACK ON THE PLANE TO RETRIEVE THEIR PERSONAL BELONGINGS IN THE OVERHEAD. APPROPRIATE CHKLIST WERE ACCOMPLISHED, FORMS FILLED OUT AND APPROPRIATE PERSONNEL NOTIFIED. MAINT PERSONNEL INDICATED THAT 1 OF THE MAIN BEARINGS FAILED AND CAUSED TURBINE FAILURE AND DESTRUCTION. THROUGHOUT THE EVENT, CREW PERFORMANCE WAS EXCELLENT AND JUDGEMENT AND ACTIONS WERE APPROPRIATE FOR THE SITUATION.
