Narrative:

Approach called traffic to us that we did not have in sight. However the other aircraft said that they had us in sight. So the controller had us continue our descent to 2000 ft. We got a RA on the TCASII that told us to stop descent which we did and to reverse (or climb). As it turned out we never saw the aircraft but reacted to the TCASII RA. I think rather than the single aircraft taking responsibility for visual the controller could have worked with us better.
