Narrative:

Crew had no radio contact between chardon VOR to just east of milton VOR. This occurred because the VOR control on the #1 VHF communication radio was turned down, unknown to crew. I am not sure how it happened, but it involved the type of communication head that has the volume on top of the control head that also includes the frequency selector. I was involved with an engine log reading and also reviewing the STAR into lga. I went over the STAR with my first officer because I had just transferred over to the medium large transport a from the medium large transport B and I had not been in the lga area in over 5 yrs. Upon reviewing the STAR I mentioned that a descent should soon be started to meet a crossing restriction. At that time I mentioned it had been quiet and to check the radios. It was then that we realized the problem. We were able to contact new york center and made a routine arrival to lga. During our time of radio silence we never deviated from altitude or course.
