Narrative:

After departing mccarran international, we were told to maintain 5500 ft MSL by departure control. We were also told to hold heading 110 degree. After 4 mins of complying with ATC instructions, we were then told to 'resume own navigation.' with that clearance, my instructor and I decided to climb to our cruising altitude of 9500. After climbing through 7000 ft MSL, departure contacted us and said we were told to maintain 5500 ft MSL. Thus, we broke an ATC instruction. However, after being told to 'resume own navigation,' my instructor and I presumed that we could fly to our cruising altitude at our determined heading. In conclusion, communication factors were our problem. Hopefully, an amendment will be made in the far/aim that clearly defines 'resume own navigation.' thank-you.
