Narrative:

Aircraft was on left base, with full flaps at 500 ft to runway 27. Engine failed. Pilot determined he was unable to make airport, ditched in water to avoid trees. Student pilot, 52 hours, ready for private pilot check ride (my student). FAA determined there was gas in both tanks and in gascolator. Determination not made at this time.

Title: SPI MAKES AN EMER FORCED LNDG IN THE WATER OFF ARPT WHEN HIS SMA'S ENG FAILS.

Narrative: ACFT WAS ON L BASE, WITH FULL FLAPS AT 500 FT TO RWY 27. ENG FAILED. PLT DETERMINED HE WAS UNABLE TO MAKE ARPT, DITCHED IN WATER TO AVOID TREES. STUDENT PLT, 52 HRS, READY FOR PRIVATE PLT CHK RIDE (MY STUDENT). FAA DETERMINED THERE WAS GAS IN BOTH TANKS AND IN GASCOLATOR. DETERMINATION NOT MADE AT THIS TIME.
