Narrative:

During tractor pushback in baltimore headset operator mentioned he was new at job. He reinstalled nose gear torque links. Tractor operator did not check operation. Somewhere between takeoff and landing roll, pin fell out. Upon nosewheel touching down (aircraft weight 100000 pounds maximum landing weight, speed 150 KTS) I had no steering except some rudder action and differential braking. When nosewheel freely cocked from center line of aircraft the aircraft shook violently until all forward motion stopped. My most exciting landing in 25 yrs. No injuries, no damage. I later spoke with manager in bwi asking them to insure this job is done properly. 158 passenger were scared but remained seated and calm. The tractor operator mentioned to me that he had a premonition to check pin security but didn't. I told him to always follow your hunches! I try to.
