Narrative:

While taxiing for takeoff on the taxiway centerline, we felt the aircraft shudder and jerk. Not knowing what caused the jolt, we decided to taxi back to the gate for an aircraft inspection. Just then, the #4 flight attendant called the cockpit to inform us that part of the left wing had been severed off. While taxiing back to the gate, we noticed a piece of construction equipment near the taxiway in a pit that severed approximately 3 ft of the left wingtip off. There were no injuries. Neither the NOTAMS, field report or ATIS mentioned men and equipment working near the taxiways. Supplemental information from acn 185712. Aircraft was taxiing out for departure and hit a front end loader off the left side of the taxiway. Aircraft should be more cognizant of vehicle at traffic and vehicles the same for aircraft. Safety zones should be established for taxiways for vehicles to remain clear.
