Narrative:

Destination airport was experiencing severe thunderstorms. Alternate (iad) was not suitable for same reason. I discussed other possible alternates with dispatcher and suggested diverting to mdt. He agreed, so the flight diverted to mdt and had normal approach and rollout, but mdt was an unauthorized airport for operations, according to our operations specifications. We required and received special FAA authorization to depart mdt and proceeded to dca after WX cleared.
