Narrative:

After an IFR training flight, we had returned to rnt and were doing touch and go's in the pattern. On our third circuit, we were on downwind and the student turned base leg at the appropriate spot. Just as we were about to turn final, we noticed another aircraft below us and slightly south of us on final. We climbed slightly and continued our base leg and flew through centerline to avoid conflict. Tower then came up on radio and told us to turn southbound (we were using runway 33). The other pilot how had been cleared for straight in landing was furious and I was shaken. Although I believe we broke no rules since we had not landed yet, in the future I will secure our clearance or instructions while still on downwind. This is my normal practice and I had assumed that the PIC who was a 110 hour private pilot had already secured the clearance.
