Narrative:

Hazy holiday wkend in southern california la basin. Many, many VFR aircraft in area. My crew alert for traffic. TCAS scope cluttered with traffic. On IFR climb out on departure from ont over pdz VOR. Small VFR aircraft because traffic conflict 12 :30, 3 mi, 500-1000' above on TCAS as we climbed. I hoped to climb ('zoom' if necessary) above it as soon as it was acquired visually. However, it was not acquired visually until after evasive action was taken based on TCAS RA and ATC traffic advisory. TCAS and ATC saved the day. A collision would have occurred west/O the heads-up alert we got from TCAS. The # of VFR aircraft in a confined hazy marginally VMC area was extremely intimidating and was considered unsafe by all 3 crew members.
