Narrative:

I picked up an aircraft from the inbound crew and when I tested the fire detection system, I got the bell but no warning lights in the fire handles. I had maintenance investigate the problem. They discovered that the wrong box had been installed earlier that day after another crew reported a faulty light on the fire control panel. Since the merger, my company has aircraft with type a and type B fire systems. The earlier mechanics had put the wrong manufacturer's box in this aircraft and it had flown 1 flight that way. If the crew had a fire, they would have heard the bell, but no lights would have come on and they would have had a tough time figuring out which engine or APU had the fire warning. It will be at least 1993 before all aircraft at this airline are type a systems. In the meantime, some fix needs to be implemented. The company doesn't see it as a big problem yet.
