Narrative:

WX undercast solid, clear above, about 7000'. Descending out of 18000' to 1000', received, 'hold west of bucky as published, maintain 10000'.' put range and distance into KNS80. Pushed button for RNAV. Apparently hit button more than once and returned to parent VOR (hch). Flew to hch and had completed 1/2 of hold. Center asked me if I was at bucky. While in hold I put bucky in RNAV LORAN. Had just seen error and replied, 'no, bucky 25(?) mi east.' center repeated hold instructions. I flew to bucky and upon arrival was cleared to swaso and to lower altitude, which put me in the cloud deck. No further discrepancies. 1 more hold, then to the approach. Knoxville radar was out. No problem occurred, but it could have been a real problem had I been in IMC and the sky a little more crowded. I shall watch more closely what comes up when I punch the buttons and I shall continue to back one primary instrument with another. I had plenty of time to program the backup LORAN before entering the hold, but because I thought the intersection was 20 NM closer than it was, I became rushed. I am going to announce, 'over bucky (or whatever), entering hold.' it can't hurt.

Title: CLEARED DIRECT BUCKY INTERSECTION BUT FLEW DIRECT HCH VOR INSTEAD.

Narrative: WX UNDERCAST SOLID, CLR ABOVE, ABOUT 7000'. DSNDING OUT OF 18000' TO 1000', RECEIVED, 'HOLD W OF BUCKY AS PUBLISHED, MAINTAIN 10000'.' PUT RANGE AND DISTANCE INTO KNS80. HAD JUST SEEN ERROR AND REPLIED, 'NO, BUCKY 25(?) MI E.' CENTER REPEATED HOLD INSTRUCTIONS. I FLEW TO BUCKY AND UPON ARR WAS CLRED TO SWASO AND TO LOWER ALT, WHICH PUT ME IN THE CLOUD DECK. NO FURTHER DISCREPANCIES. 1 MORE HOLD, THEN TO THE APCH. KNOXVILLE RADAR WAS OUT. NO PROB OCCURRED, BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN A REAL PROB HAD I BEEN IN IMC AND THE SKY A LITTLE MORE CROWDED. I SHALL WATCH MORE CLOSELY WHAT COMES UP WHEN I PUNCH THE BUTTONS AND I SHALL CONTINUE TO BACK ONE PRIMARY INSTRUMENT WITH ANOTHER. I HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO PROGRAM THE BACKUP LORAN BEFORE ENTERING THE HOLD, BUT BECAUSE I THOUGHT THE INTXN WAS 20 NM CLOSER THAN IT WAS, I BECAME RUSHED. I AM GOING TO ANNOUNCE, 'OVER BUCKY (OR WHATEVER), ENTERING HOLD.' IT CAN'T HURT.
