Narrative:

After an IFR departure from teb, the ny departure controller cleared our flight to climb to 11000'. I read back the clearance confirming our climb to 11000', during the climb we were changed over to the next controller. When I made contact with this controller, we were leveling off at 11000'. At this point the controller asked us what our assigned altitude was and I told him the last controller cleared us to 11000'. The controller told us we were only cleared to 10000' and to descend to 10000'. After starting our descent to 10000' he changed us over to the next controller, who then cleared us to climb to 12000'. There was no further discussion about this conflict in altitude assignment.
