Narrative:

Flight from ZZZ to ZZZ1. At 25;000 ft. Near top of descent; I heard a loud bang sound near the windshield. The captain's windshield shattered; but did not come loose. Pressurization was normal; but we donned masks just in case the window failed to stay together. First officer was pilot flying. I asked him to advise ATC and start the diversion to ZZZ2 while I called dispatch ops; station and cabin. I amended the release with dispatch. We got to ZZZ2; wrote up the discrepancy; changed aircraft and went to ZZZ1. There was no evidence of a bird strike.I am not sure the cause. Maybe an issue with the windshield heat. I would be curious to find out what mx concludes.
