Smoke fumes were smelled and confirmed by the first officer. Captain's ehsi [electronically generated horizontal situation indicator]/map display shorted out with two bright flashes; then failed. Oxygen masks were donned. Crew communications established. First officer continued as pilot flying. Appropriate QRH checklist were completed. Smoke fumes ceased. Diversion to ZZZ was concurred with dispatch. Landed without further incident. Fire trucks did an inspection; no damage noted and cleared. I would like to thank my first officer; dispatcher; ATC and fire department for helping to achieve safe outcome.
