Narrative:

On taxi-out, had a gen field and breaker light come on. Operating manual says to disconnect CSD. We disconnected, making the gen inoperative. After takeoff, looking at MEL it said we were not allowed to placard gen inoperative. We should have read MEL on ground and taxied back in and had maintenance placard gen. Supplemental information from acn 174788: there was a great desire to continue with our on-time performance for the sequence, especially with this 'kick off' flight, and we overlooked basic written guidance.
