Narrative:

An air carrier X was in position holding on runway 1L at sfo. We were in position holding for takeoff clearance on runway 1R. Tower cleared air carrier X for takeoff, waited a few seconds and then cleared us for takeoff. Air carrier X was very slow in beginning its takeoff roll. We caught up to abeam air carrier X when tower told us to abort. Air carrier X continued his takeoff and departure. Our airspeed estimated at 80 KTS when abort initiated. Upon clearing the runway, sfo tower stated he was sorry, but policy was 2 aircraft could not take off simultaneously wing tip to wing tip on runways 1L and 1R. He stated he did not realize air carrier X would take so long in initiating his takeoff roll. After reporting all this to my dispatcher, obtaining a new release time for weight and fuel, etc, and allowing the brakes to cool as prescribed in the handbook, we departed west/O further incident.
