Narrative:

While in cruise flight, the pilot noticed a surging on the speaker. Strobes were turned off and problem was corrected. Approximately 1-2 mins later when trying to contact departure all electrical equipment went dead. Non essential equipment was turned off and ATC was contacted momentarily. Communications were lost once more and contact was not made for approximately 5 mins. In this time 7700 was squawked for 1 min and 7600 thereafter. Communications were repaired, however, due to the fact that we could not maintain 2-WAY communications a continuous plan was cleared to VFR conditions if communications could not be accomplished. We did maintain 2-WAY communication long enough to make an emergency approach to runway 31 at nashville. The landing was uneventful, however, communications were once again lost after landing and light signals were given to parking.
