Narrative:

Took off for 22 NM local flight to fort dodge. Called fort dodge FSS (122.3) for information but the briefer gave no response. Called for an advisory on unicom (122.8) again with no response. Called unicom (122.8) several more times en route again west/O responses. Listened to AWOS (124.75) for numbers and heard very strong winds blowing from 240 degree. No mention of closed runway on AWOS. On final approach, windsock confirmed strong winds blowing down the runway, but no other hazardous factors associated with the dry, snow free runway except a snowblower on the northwest side of the lights completely off the runway. Note: no briefings in the earlier part of the day had mention of a closed runway for the fort dodge, webster city area. A later briefing confirmed the closure. Suggestions: mark runway somehow for temperature closures. Check FSS frequency 122.3. Several complaints from fellow pilots for not being able to reach FSS. Fort dodge FBO should keep unicom speaker to an audible level.
