Narrative:

While in our final descent phase I noticed that the pitch trim indication had amber dashes. I asked for my first officer (first officer) to look in the QRH and we were unable to locate any procedure. The aircraft was controlling normally. I initially contacted the station and asked for a phone patch to operations (we are too far north for arinc) they said 'they couldn't do that; they could give me a cell phone when we landed.'ATC tried to get me a phone patch to maintenance control but they weren't able to make it work. I exercised my emergency authority since I wasn't able to reach anyone except via ACARS; briefed the crew and we landed the aircraft and brought it to the gate. I came to the back and briefed the passengers and thanked them for their patience and understanding.being unable to communicate with maintenance control left me with limited options and [requesting priority handling] since there was no way or no one knew how to get me in contact or a phone patch to operations. This morning I spoke to the [supervisor] and he informed me maintenance told him this was a common issue with the pitch trim indication. If I could have spoken to someone who knew this I would have not needed to request priority handling] most likely. I took the most conservative route.reference to this should be in the QRH.
