Narrative:

Flight from hnl-lax. Given clearance to contact ZLA at edsel. Unable to make contact initially at edsel. When contact finally made, controller gave us direct dinty and that we were 20 mi north of course. We could not determine cause. When I talked to center on phone I mentioned that we had an air carrier Z in front of us which we followed from hnl on our TCAS radar, and was told that he was 10 mi north of course. No further problems. Landing at lax 1 INS had an 18 NM error, but we operated in triple mix, so none of us in cockpit were able to determine problem.
