Narrative:

On a high density altitude day; our 65 horsepower cub wasn't climbing very well; but that was okay because we were planning on cruising to the nearest grass strip for landing practice at 500-1000 ft. Anyways. The airplane we were flying had no radios or transponder. We proceeded direct off of our downwind which led us close to the final approach path of the runway we had just taken off of. What appeared to be a cherokee flew past our window to the right at what seemed like 30 ft. Away. My instructor did not notice the airplane. I now have a headset adapter and ptt (push to talk) button for my hand held radio in hopes that this will not happen again.
