Narrative:

On ground at hickam AFB, received from clearance delivery (hnl) the following: 'cleared to kahului airport via molokai 3 departure to molokai, then as filed, maintain 5000, expect 7000, departure 124.8, squawk XXXX.' I read back. Clearance delivery said, 'readback correct.' my safety pilot (not INS rated) wrote down the identical clearance. When I had filed for was palay 2, lny, lny.camps 1. It was impossible to intercept my STAR into ogg 'as filed' from mkk VORTAC, so I assumed I had to fly to lny VORTAC on V7 after mkk. At 3.5 DME outbnd, center called to ask why I hadn't intercepted V8 instead. V8 would have put me on the wrong side of the airport to intercept the ILS runway 2, and into an area where my preflight WX briefing had led me to expect IMC. It also contradicted the 'as filed' in my clearance. Center clearly had a different idea of my clearance that I did, even though readback was correct. I told center I wanted the lny.camps 1, and they gave me a 'new' clearance of V7, lny.camps 1 (what I thought I'd had to begin with). Later in the same flight, while being vectored to intercept the ILS runway 2 at kahului, maui, my safety pilot informed me I was flying into dangerous proximity to terrain. I was in an area where terrain made ogg VOR unusable, about 15 DME on 240 degree right, so it was almost impossible for me to catch the error had the conditions been IMC. I'd have had to use ADF. I told maui approach and they gave me new vectors which corrected the problem.

Title: PLT OF SMA DEPARTED MKK TO LNY. CENTER CTLR WAS EXPECTING HIM TO FLY V8.

Narrative: ON GND AT HICKAM AFB, RECEIVED FROM CLRNC DELIVERY (HNL) THE FOLLOWING: 'CLRED TO KAHULUI ARPT VIA MOLOKAI 3 DEP TO MOLOKAI, THEN AS FILED, MAINTAIN 5000, EXPECT 7000, DEP 124.8, SQUAWK XXXX.' I READ BACK. CLRNC DELIVERY SAID, 'READBACK CORRECT.' MY SAFETY PLT (NOT INS RATED) WROTE DOWN THE IDENTICAL CLRNC. V8 WOULD HAVE PUT ME ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ARPT TO INTERCEPT THE ILS RWY 2, AND INTO AN AREA WHERE MY PREFLT WX BRIEFING HAD LED ME TO EXPECT IMC. IT ALSO CONTRADICTED THE 'AS FILED' IN MY CLRNC. CENTER CLEARLY HAD A DIFFERENT IDEA OF MY CLRNC THAT I DID, EVEN THOUGH READBACK WAS CORRECT. I TOLD CENTER I WANTED THE LNY.CAMPS 1, AND THEY GAVE ME A 'NEW' CLRNC OF V7, LNY.CAMPS 1 (WHAT I THOUGHT I'D HAD TO BEGIN WITH). LATER IN THE SAME FLT, WHILE BEING VECTORED TO INTERCEPT THE ILS RWY 2 AT KAHULUI, MAUI, MY SAFETY PLT INFORMED ME I WAS FLYING INTO DANGEROUS PROX TO TERRAIN. I WAS IN AN AREA WHERE TERRAIN MADE OGG VOR UNUSABLE, ABOUT 15 DME ON 240 DEG R, SO IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO CATCH THE ERROR HAD THE CONDITIONS BEEN IMC. I'D HAVE HAD TO USE ADF. I TOLD MAUI APCH AND THEY GAVE ME NEW VECTORS WHICH CORRECTED THE PROB.
