Narrative:
Participating in formation flight. I flew lead airplane of a two airplane element; with airplane #2 on left wing. A second element of two airplanes (#3 and #4) had planned to join our element for two elements in cruise flight with airplanes #3 and #4 on my right wing. During the first rejoin attempt airplanes 3 and 4 were unable to rejoin and aborted the attempt. During this attempt; aircraft #3 and #4 touched wing and rudder without their knowledge during the aborted rejoin attempt. Aircraft #3 and #4 then reformed and joined aircraft #1 and #2 and completed the flight uneventfully. On the ground it was noted that minor damage to right wing and rudder of aircraft #3 and #4 and was repaired without incident.
