Narrative:

On takeoff from runway 32L (T-1) at O'hare international, and at V1 (141 KTS), a loud explosive bang was heard, the aircraft shuddered and vibrated, the 'engine fail' light illuminated, and the aircraft began to swerve to the left. Since the ability of the aircraft to safely fly was questionable, and since substantial runway remained, I made the decision to abort the takeoff. Only moderate braking was required, and the aircraft tracked on or near the runway centerline. Additional forward thrust was required to continue to the end of the runway for a turn off to clear the active runway. During the abort, the tower was notified of our action and the passengers were requested to remain seated. No evacuation was initiated and no injuries were reported. In reality the abort was no different from a normal landing and rollout. After clearing the runway, I made an announcement to the passengers briefly explaining what had happened in an effort to stem any fears and uncertainties that I am sure developed. The aircraft parked at the 14R run up pad and maintenance was summoned to conduct an exterior inspection. Maintenance reported no visible damage and requested that we run up the #1 engine. Permission was granted by the tower. At approximately 85 percent N1, a loud explosive bang was again heard and the engine was shut down. The aircraft was then taxied to the terminal under its own power with no further problems occurring.

Title: ACR WDB ENGINE FAILURE DURING TKOF. TKOF ABORT.

Narrative: ON TKOF FROM RWY 32L (T-1) AT O'HARE INTL, AND AT V1 (141 KTS), A LOUD EXPLOSIVE BANG WAS HEARD, THE ACFT SHUDDERED AND VIBRATED, THE 'ENG FAIL' LIGHT ILLUMINATED, AND THE ACFT BEGAN TO SWERVE TO THE L. SINCE THE ABILITY OF THE ACFT TO SAFELY FLY WAS QUESTIONABLE, AND SINCE SUBSTANTIAL RWY REMAINED, I MADE THE DECISION TO ABORT THE TKOF. ONLY MODERATE BRAKING WAS REQUIRED, AND THE ACFT TRACKED ON OR NEAR THE RWY CTRLINE. ADDITIONAL FORWARD THRUST WAS REQUIRED TO CONTINUE TO THE END OF THE RWY FOR A TURN OFF TO CLR THE ACTIVE RWY. DURING THE ABORT, THE TWR WAS NOTIFIED OF OUR ACTION AND THE PAXS WERE REQUESTED TO REMAIN SEATED. NO EVACUATION WAS INITIATED AND NO INJURIES WERE RPTED. IN REALITY THE ABORT WAS NO DIFFERENT FROM A NORMAL LNDG AND ROLLOUT. AFTER CLRING THE RWY, I MADE AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO THE PAXS BRIEFLY EXPLAINING WHAT HAD HAPPENED IN AN EFFORT TO STEM ANY FEARS AND UNCERTAINTIES THAT I AM SURE DEVELOPED. THE ACFT PARKED AT THE 14R RUN UP PAD AND MAINT WAS SUMMONED TO CONDUCT AN EXTERIOR INSPECTION. MAINT RPTED NO VISIBLE DAMAGE AND REQUESTED THAT WE RUN UP THE #1 ENG. PERMISSION WAS GRANTED BY THE TWR. AT APPROX 85 PERCENT N1, A LOUD EXPLOSIVE BANG WAS AGAIN HEARD AND THE ENG WAS SHUT DOWN. THE ACFT WAS THEN TAXIED TO THE TERMINAL UNDER ITS OWN PWR WITH NO FURTHER PROBS OCCURRING.
