Narrative:
I was informed that my current student; who is flying with another CFI; overran the runway into a ditch while on a solo cross country flight. The aircraft had minor damage and the student was not injured. While being investigated by the NTSB/FAA; it was found that the student did not have a student certificate. Later; we found that the student did in fact have a certificate that was issued in 2002 with no expiration date on his iacra homepage. While looking through all paperwork; I assumed that his 2002 student certificate was still valid. After the incident; I reissued the student a new certificate through the iacra website. With the new rules and regulations; I have educated myself (after being out of active teaching during these rule changes); along with the student and the other CFI; that the student needs the hard copy of the student certificate for future flights. From now on; I'll be making sure all my students have their student certificates on their person. I will also make sure all documents are up to date with the current standards.
