Narrative:

Departed field at daybreak to the practice areas and returned an hour later for pattern work. After 20 mins we saw a truck pull up to the departure end of the runway and a man begin work on the asphalt. We full stopped and were followed by the truck. The driver asked if we knew the airport was closed. We did not. Neither, apparently, did the other 4 aircraft that landed and departed during that same time frame. Apparently the NOTAM was not posted with the FAA (so said another pilot). However, I failed to ask for NOTAMS when checking the WX, so it was my own error. I also thought that under the circumstances, if the runway was to be closed for a period of time for repairs, the runway should have been marked with temporary 'X' and the notice should have been posted at the FBO. Regardless, the problem began with my failure to check NOTAMS because it was 'just local sortie.'

Title: INSTRUCTOR PLT DOES TOUCH AND GO LNDGS AT CLOSED ARPT.

Narrative: DEPARTED FIELD AT DAYBREAK TO THE PRACTICE AREAS AND RETURNED AN HR LATER FOR PATTERN WORK. AFTER 20 MINS WE SAW A TRUCK PULL UP TO THE DEP END OF THE RWY AND A MAN BEGIN WORK ON THE ASPHALT. WE FULL STOPPED AND WERE FOLLOWED BY THE TRUCK. THE DRIVER ASKED IF WE KNEW THE ARPT WAS CLOSED. WE DID NOT. NEITHER, APPARENTLY, DID THE OTHER 4 ACFT THAT LANDED AND DEPARTED DURING THAT SAME TIME FRAME. APPARENTLY THE NOTAM WAS NOT POSTED WITH THE FAA (SO SAID ANOTHER PLT). HOWEVER, I FAILED TO ASK FOR NOTAMS WHEN CHKING THE WX, SO IT WAS MY OWN ERROR. I ALSO THOUGHT THAT UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES, IF THE RWY WAS TO BE CLOSED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME FOR REPAIRS, THE RWY SHOULD HAVE BEEN MARKED WITH TEMPORARY 'X' AND THE NOTICE SHOULD HAVE BEEN POSTED AT THE FBO. REGARDLESS, THE PROB BEGAN WITH MY FAILURE TO CHK NOTAMS BECAUSE IT WAS 'JUST LCL SORTIE.'
