Narrative:

During cruise at 10000' MSL the engine instantaneously developed a large power loss (from 21' map to 8' map). As soon as the power loss developed a loss of engine checklist/emergency was executed. As a result of the power loss, the altitude of the aircraft was decreasing at a rate of 500-750 FPM. ATC was advised of the problem and an emergency was declared. At advised me of grant county airport from my position at 10 mi at a bearing of 330 degrees. I was cleared to 7000' MSL and when airport was in sight I was given further clearance to execute a visibility approach into grant county. A safe landing was executed and flight plan closed with columbus FSS. Upon landing at grant county airport local a&P examined the aircraft power plant and found no problems. The engine seemed to regain normal operation at approximately 1500' AGL. From that point on the engine ran normally until engine shutdown on the grant county airport ramp.

Title: GA SMA LOST ENGINE POWER AT CRUISE ALT AT NIGHT. ZDV GAVE FLT ASSIST TO NEAREST ARPT.

Narrative: DURING CRUISE AT 10000' MSL THE ENG INSTANTANEOUSLY DEVELOPED A LARGE PWR LOSS (FROM 21' MAP TO 8' MAP). AS SOON AS THE PWR LOSS DEVELOPED A LOSS OF ENG CHKLIST/EMER WAS EXECUTED. AS A RESULT OF THE PWR LOSS, THE ALT OF THE ACFT WAS DECREASING AT A RATE OF 500-750 FPM. ATC WAS ADVISED OF THE PROB AND AN EMER WAS DECLARED. AT ADVISED ME OF GRANT COUNTY ARPT FROM MY POS AT 10 MI AT A BEARING OF 330 DEGS. I WAS CLRED TO 7000' MSL AND WHEN ARPT WAS IN SIGHT I WAS GIVEN FURTHER CLRNC TO EXECUTE A VIS APCH INTO GRANT COUNTY. A SAFE LNDG WAS EXECUTED AND FLT PLAN CLOSED WITH COLUMBUS FSS. UPON LNDG AT GRANT COUNTY ARPT LCL A&P EXAMINED THE ACFT PWR PLANT AND FOUND NO PROBS. THE ENG SEEMED TO REGAIN NORMAL OPERATION AT APPROX 1500' AGL. FROM THAT POINT ON THE ENG RAN NORMALLY UNTIL ENG SHUTDOWN ON THE GRANT COUNTY ARPT RAMP.
