Narrative:

Flight xx clt-mia was taxiing for departure on runway 36L. It was night VFR and we were told to taxi to spot 5 and contact ground control. Ground control told us to taxi to 36L via bravo and cross runway 5-23. We made an incorrect turn onto a different taxiway and told ground immediately. He said no problem, and to continue to echo and then cross 5023. The lighting and signs at some of these airports are horrible, and something must be done to make taxi instructions much more clear. It would help to have the taxiway name painted on the taxiway every 100 yds or so. That way, you don't have to rely on poor signs and inadequate lighting to successfully complete something as critical as taxiing an aircraft.
