Narrative:

Clearance read kdtw dxd DXO217...FWA071 fwa bvt rbs J19 stl.... Departed runway 21R departure heading 230 degree after contacting departure control and climbing through approximately 3000'. We were instructed to turn left proceed direct to annts intersection, a point on the detroit metropolitan 8 departure. Dxd 217/37 DME. This was the first time this point was mentioned. Clearance used the crossing of the 217 off dxo and fwa 071. The first officer and myself idented the point (annts) on the departure and I instructed the first officer to enter it in the FMS and proceed direct to it. He entered the point but entered aants in error. This point instructed a left turn to approximately 160 degree. We questioned departure on the turn and were within a min told to turn back to the right and proceed to the correct point on the 217 degree right (annts). What caused the error was the misspelling of and, complete knowledge of whereabouts of departure points on the SID. Recurrence can be avoided if this point were idented in the clearance. I think most important two points no matter were they are located, under this automated flying concept, should not be called the same and definitely not spelled so similar. Annts point on detroit metropolitan 8 departure. Aants point on low chart #30.

Title: CLEARED TO ANNTS. FO PROGRAMMED AANTS IN ERROR.

Narrative: CLRNC READ KDTW DXD DXO217...FWA071 FWA BVT RBS J19 STL.... DEPARTED RWY 21R DEP HDG 230 DEG AFTER CONTACTING DEP CTL AND CLBING THROUGH APPROX 3000'. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO TURN L PROCEED DIRECT TO ANNTS INTXN, A POINT ON THE DETROIT METRO 8 DEP. DXD 217/37 DME. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THIS POINT WAS MENTIONED. CLRNC USED THE XING OF THE 217 OFF DXO AND FWA 071. THE F/O AND MYSELF IDENTED THE POINT (ANNTS) ON THE DEP AND I INSTRUCTED THE F/O TO ENTER IT IN THE FMS AND PROCEED DIRECT TO IT. HE ENTERED THE POINT BUT ENTERED AANTS IN ERROR. THIS POINT INSTRUCTED A L TURN TO APPROX 160 DEG. WE QUESTIONED DEP ON THE TURN AND WERE WITHIN A MIN TOLD TO TURN BACK TO THE R AND PROCEED TO THE CORRECT POINT ON THE 217 DEG R (ANNTS). WHAT CAUSED THE ERROR WAS THE MISSPELLING OF AND, COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE OF WHEREABOUTS OF DEP POINTS ON THE SID. RECURRENCE CAN BE AVOIDED IF THIS POINT WERE IDENTED IN THE CLRNC. I THINK MOST IMPORTANT TWO POINTS NO MATTER WERE THEY ARE LOCATED, UNDER THIS AUTOMATED FLYING CONCEPT, SHOULD NOT BE CALLED THE SAME AND DEFINITELY NOT SPELLED SO SIMILAR. ANNTS POINT ON DETROIT METRO 8 DEP. AANTS POINT ON LOW CHART #30.
