Narrative:

Cleared visibility approach into bur airport with reference to known landmarks although airport itself had not been seen or reported in sight. Clearance was to maintain 3000' until past whiteman airpark. We descended from 5000' to 3000' into haze. Misidented landmarks which would have put us beyond whiteman and continued descent. At 2200' but tower called to say we were in the whiteman traffic area, hold present altitude (2200'). No traffic observed in the pattern. Continued approach and landing bur.
