Narrative:

On departure from msp, the altitude window of the mode control panel had 10000' set in it instead of the assigned limit of 5000'. After takeoff, the tower switched us to departure control (120.0). The captain (PNF) attempted to contact departure control twice by saying: 'departure, air carrier out of 2600' for 10000'.' later (about 30 seconds) because of no response from departure control, 'departure, air carrier out of 3500' for 10000'.' thinking perhaps he had the wrong departure control frequency, captain returned to msp tower who confirmed that 120.0 was correct. As soon as 120.0 was reselected, and before we could check on again, departure control said: 'air carrier level at 6000', over.' the captain responded: 'roger, we're passing 6300', we will go back down to 6000'.' departure control then said: 'roger air carrier, your clearance altitude was 5000', you have conflicting traffic at 11:30 4 mi at 7000'.' the captain responded: 'roger, traffic is in sight, we will maintain VFR sep.' we were then given a turn to on course and a climb to a higher altitude.

Title: MLG FLT CREW HAD INCORRECT ALT SET IN MODE CTL PANEL. ALT DEVIATION.

Narrative: ON DEP FROM MSP, THE ALT WINDOW OF THE MODE CTL PANEL HAD 10000' SET IN IT INSTEAD OF THE ASSIGNED LIMIT OF 5000'. AFTER TKOF, THE TWR SWITCHED US TO DEP CTL (120.0). THE CAPT (PNF) ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT DEP CTL TWICE BY SAYING: 'DEP, ACR OUT OF 2600' FOR 10000'.' LATER (ABOUT 30 SECS) BECAUSE OF NO RESPONSE FROM DEP CTL, 'DEP, ACR OUT OF 3500' FOR 10000'.' THINKING PERHAPS HE HAD THE WRONG DEP CTL FREQ, CAPT RETURNED TO MSP TWR WHO CONFIRMED THAT 120.0 WAS CORRECT. AS SOON AS 120.0 WAS RESELECTED, AND BEFORE WE COULD CHK ON AGAIN, DEP CTL SAID: 'ACR LEVEL AT 6000', OVER.' THE CAPT RESPONDED: 'ROGER, WE'RE PASSING 6300', WE WILL GO BACK DOWN TO 6000'.' DEP CTL THEN SAID: 'ROGER ACR, YOUR CLRNC ALT WAS 5000', YOU HAVE CONFLICTING TFC AT 11:30 4 MI AT 7000'.' THE CAPT RESPONDED: 'ROGER, TFC IS IN SIGHT, WE WILL MAINTAIN VFR SEP.' WE WERE THEN GIVEN A TURN TO ON COURSE AND A CLB TO A HIGHER ALT.
