Narrative:

During approach we had a flap failure upon selecting 12 degrees of flap. We informed the tower that we needed to break off the approach to troubleshoot the problem. We were issued a climb and heading as well as a frequency change. We requested delaying vectors from the next controller and conducted the flap fail checklist. The indicated procedure did not clear the problem. When attempting to re-select the flaps we heard a grinding noise; apparently from the left side of the aircraft. At this point we prepared for a no-flap landing; performed the required checklists and briefed our passenger. We landed without incident in visual conditions.
