Narrative:
10 seconds after takeoff the engine RPM increased severely, with a decrease in rotor RPM. I immediately entered automatic-rotation to maintain the rotor RPM, and made an emergency landing on a slope. Due to the angle of the slope the tail rotor hit the ground. This is the only damage. I know the owner of the aircraft, and have flown this aircraft several times before. Unfortunately I flew west/O knowing the temporary registration had been expired for 3 days.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMA HELICOPTER HAD ROTOR DRIVE FAILURE JUST AFTER TKOF. AUTO-ROTATED TO OFF ARPT LNDG DAMAGING TAIL ROTOR. ACFT REGISTRATION HAD EXPIRED.
Narrative: 10 SECS AFTER TKOF THE ENG RPM INCREASED SEVERELY, WITH A DECREASE IN ROTOR RPM. I IMMEDIATELY ENTERED AUTO-ROTATION TO MAINTAIN THE ROTOR RPM, AND MADE AN EMER LNDG ON A SLOPE. DUE TO THE ANGLE OF THE SLOPE THE TAIL ROTOR HIT THE GND. THIS IS THE ONLY DAMAGE. I KNOW THE OWNER OF THE ACFT, AND HAVE FLOWN THIS ACFT SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE. UNFORTUNATELY I FLEW W/O KNOWING THE TEMPORARY REGISTRATION HAD BEEN EXPIRED FOR 3 DAYS.
