Narrative:

On takeoff from private turf runway approximately 25 mi ssw of bna VOR engine stopped. Full carburetor heat was applied and fuel tanks switched to no avail. Altitude was approximately 250-300'. Emergency landing was made in farm field adjacent to soccer field and housing development. At no time was there danger to property/persons. No passenger were on board. Aircraft was successfully landed with no damage. Engine was immediately inspected for sight of failure. Some sweating was observed on carburetor body. Carburetor icing suspected. (OAT approximately 65-70 degrees F, approximately 60-70% relative humidity. All fuel drains were sumped and no water found.) after approximately 5 mins engine was restarted and runup was normal. Static power test was normal. Carburetor heat application yielded normal rmp drop. Normal takeoff was experienced with no anomalies. (Field length approximately 2000' short mowed grass.) on return to base fuel tanks drained (6 gals left tank, 7 gals right tank). No fuel contamination detected. Carburetor ice seems to be probably cause of forced landing.

Title: SMA SUFFERS POWER LOSS AFTER TKOF AND MAKES FORCED LNDG ON NEARBY FIELD.

Narrative: ON TKOF FROM PVT TURF RWY APPROX 25 MI SSW OF BNA VOR ENG STOPPED. FULL CARB HEAT WAS APPLIED AND FUEL TANKS SWITCHED TO NO AVAIL. ALT WAS APPROX 250-300'. EMER LNDG WAS MADE IN FARM FIELD ADJACENT TO SOCCER FIELD AND HOUSING DEVELOPMENT. AT NO TIME WAS THERE DANGER TO PROPERTY/PERSONS. NO PAX WERE ON BOARD. ACFT WAS SUCCESSFULLY LANDED WITH NO DAMAGE. ENG WAS IMMEDIATELY INSPECTED FOR SIGHT OF FAILURE. SOME SWEATING WAS OBSERVED ON CARB BODY. CARB ICING SUSPECTED. (OAT APPROX 65-70 DEGS F, APPROX 60-70% RELATIVE HUMIDITY. ALL FUEL DRAINS WERE SUMPED AND NO WATER FOUND.) AFTER APPROX 5 MINS ENG WAS RESTARTED AND RUNUP WAS NORMAL. STATIC PWR TEST WAS NORMAL. CARB HEAT APPLICATION YIELDED NORMAL RMP DROP. NORMAL TKOF WAS EXPERIENCED WITH NO ANOMALIES. (FIELD LENGTH APPROX 2000' SHORT MOWED GRASS.) ON RETURN TO BASE FUEL TANKS DRAINED (6 GALS LEFT TANK, 7 GALS RIGHT TANK). NO FUEL CONTAMINATION DETECTED. CARB ICE SEEMS TO BE PROBABLY CAUSE OF FORCED LNDG.
