Narrative:

I was receiving flight following from edw AFB approach. Traffic was called to me. I did not realize the first call as a passenger was speaking on the intercom above the controller. Shortly thereafter (approximately 10 seconds) controller suggested immediate left turn. I complied. Traffic was seen and avoidance made west/O significant proximity being breached. Conclusion: dangerous situation occurred which could have been avoided/prevented by: 1) earlier notification of traffic by ATC (descent was begun several mi earlier at 9500') and issuance of avoidance directives (vectors). 2) elimination of cockpit distrs by PIC. Although the situation occurred, the system worked.
