Narrative:
On an IFR flight plan to det, det approach cleared me for a visibility approach to det to maintain 3000' until the shoreline. At about 9.5 mi from the field approaching the shoreline I called 'field in sight' and was cleared to det tower frequency. Upon calling in to det tower 9 mi east the tower cleared me to land immediately, even though I was still 9 mi out. Since I was already on a right base for the active runway 33 I had to descend quickly to be slow enough to reduce to gear down speed in time to land. I leveled off at about 1700' to slow down, called 2 mi on base, all on autoplt. The tower then cleared a departure in front of me and advised me approach had given them a low altitude alert on me. The landing was completed west/O problem and well ahead of another aircraft on a long (probably IFR) final. I do not know and have been unable to guess why the low altitude alert was given. Maybe approach thought I started my descent from 3000' too soon, although I started down right at the shoreline. Perhaps there is an approach control local altitude limit not on my charts. In fact I have been unable to find out if there are any altitude restrictions on a visibility approach after being cleared to land other than VFR limits. The only unusual aspects to this approach were the clearance to land 9 mi from the runway and the low altitude alert. Therefore, I do know what to do differently in the future.

Title: GA SMA ON A VIS APCH TO FET WAS ADVISED BY DET TWR THAT APCH CTLR HAD GIVEN THEM A MSAW ALERT ON THE ACFT.

THE LNDG WAS COMPLETED W/O PROB AND WELL AHEAD OF ANOTHER ACFT ON A LONG (PROBABLY IFR) FINAL. I DO NOT KNOW AND HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO GUESS WHY THE LOW ALT ALERT WAS GIVEN. MAYBE APCH THOUGHT I STARTED MY DSNT FROM 3000' TOO SOON, ALTHOUGH I STARTED DOWN R AT THE SHORELINE. PERHAPS THERE IS AN APCH CTL LCL ALT LIMIT NOT ON MY CHARTS. IN FACT I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND OUT IF THERE ARE ANY ALT RESTRICTIONS ON A VIS APCH AFTER BEING CLRED TO LAND OTHER THAN VFR LIMITS. THE ONLY UNUSUAL ASPECTS TO THIS APCH WERE THE CLRNC TO LAND 9 MI FROM THE RWY AND THE LOW ALT ALERT. THEREFORE, I DO KNOW WHAT TO DO DIFFERENTLY IN THE FUTURE.
